Changes made to ensure customers are able to safely and confidently navigate our toll plazas that will all but put cash toll collection behind us. Illinois Tollway Executive Director José Alvarez says, “Customers will begin to see permanent changes at toll plazas system-wide. Recently, though, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many states to go exclusively cashless. Cashless Tollwaysĭrivers may be accustomed to seeing something like a three-lane setup where two lanes are for transponders and one lane is for cash payment. As an added incentive, tolls are usually discounted to encourage drivers to go electronic. Then, every time a transponder is pinged, it deducts a certain amount of money from the driver’s account. Drivers place a transponder within their vehicle, allowing them to drive right through the toll. A transponder is a device that will receive a signal and then emit a different signal in response. For instance, this equipment simplified and sped up the process by automatically communicating with a transponder. ![]() Through the years we’ve seen the use of electronic toll equipment become increasingly popular and improve the flow of traffic. Increases in technology eventually changed all of that. Before these, there were toll-takers who would collect the money and operate the gate manually. Many of us may remember tolls being collected via toll booths where you would have to stop, enter money into the machine, then proceed once an automatic gate lifts. Any toll roads in FL outside of the Orlando area will not accept E-ZPass. E-ZPass is now recognized and accepted in the Orlando area only at E-Pass toll booths, but not at SunPass toll booths. I'm assuming I-Pass is an E-ZPass member. ![]() In the Orlando area, some stretches of toll roads are operated by CFXway, and other stretches by the Turnpike (in addition to the Turnpike itself.) They can be identified by the signage at the toll booths, which will say either E-Pass or SunPass (the other may appear underneath in smaller type.) E-Pass and SunPass are fully interoperable within FL. SunPass is the transponder of Florida's Turnpike Enterprise. E-Pass is the transponder of CFXway, which is the regional toll agency in the Orlando area. ![]()
